Potty training doesn’t have to be a battle. In fact, it can be an exciting and even fun milestone for both you and your child! With the right approach, you can turn potty training into an enjoyable experience that your child looks forward to. Here are some creative ways to get your little one excited about using the potty.
1. Make the Bathroom a Fun Place
Start by introducing the potty in a fun, relaxed way. A great first step is to change your child’s diaper in the bathroom, helping them make the connection that pee and poop belong in that space. After changing their diaper, encourage them to flush the toilet and say “bye-bye” to the poop. This simple act reinforces the concept of the potty in a positive way.
2. Model the Behavior
If you have a boy and plan to teach him to stand up while peeing, let a familiar male figure (dad, grandparent, or older brother) demonstrate how to do it. Kids love mimicking adults and seeing someone they trust model this behavior will make it feel more familiar and less intimidating.
3. Read Potty Training Books
Make potty training a fun story by reading books about it! There are plenty of playful, silly, and informative potty training books that can ease any anxiety. A few great titles to consider are:
- Potty by Leslie Patricelli
- Big Girl Potty by Elizabeth Verdick
- Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi
You can even take it a step further and create a personalized potty training book with your child’s name, their bathroom, and their favorite toys. These custom books make potty training feel special and personal.
4. Decorate the Bathroom Together
Help your child take ownership of their bathroom space by allowing them to decorate it. Use fun and removable stickers, playful wall decals, or colorful towels. Creating a space that feels welcoming and exciting will make the bathroom a place they want to spend time in.
5. Let Them Play Potty Training
Kids learn through play, so let them teach their favorite doll or action figure how to use the potty! This playful practice makes potty training feel like a fun game rather than a task. Plus, it reinforces the concept in a low-pressure way.
6. Add Music to the Mix
Music can set a relaxed and positive mood. Consider playing some of your child’s favorite songs in the bathroom. A smart speaker like Alexa or Google Home can easily set the tone with fun tunes or calming music, helping your child feel more at ease during potty time.
7. Use Aromatherapy for a Calm Environment
Introducing soothing scents like lavender can create a calming environment that eases your child’s nerves. Aromatherapy in the bathroom can help turn the space into a comforting retreat, which may make them more willing to use the potty.
8. Share Your Own Potty Training Story
Children love hearing stories about their parents when they were little. Share your own potty training journey with them. This not only helps normalize the experience but also reassures them that everyone goes through it.
9. Reward Them with Their Favorite Things
Incorporate your child’s favorite things into the potty training process. Whether it’s spending one-on-one time with a loved one, going to a fun place like an amusement park, or receiving their favorite stickers or treats, rewarding your child will help motivate them. You can create a reward chart where they earn stickers, treats, or a special activity after each successful potty trip.
10. Make Potty Training Fun with a Personalized Chart!
Potty training can be a challenge, but a custom Potty Training Chart makes it exciting! Imagine a chart designed just for your child, featuring their name, photo, and favorite theme—whether it’s Bluey, Frozen, Paw Patrol, or anything they love most.
A personalized approach adds extra motivation and makes the potty-training journey even more special. We create these unique charts to help parents like you!
